Southern California water agencies will pay you to tear out a thirsty lawn and put in a water wise yard, and permeable pavers can be part of it. Here is how the 2026 rebate works, and the one rule that costs people the money if they miss it.
Through SoCal Water$mart, funded by the Metropolitan Water District, residential turf replacement rebates typically run about $3 to $4 per square foot of lawn removed, and more in some cities depending on what your local water provider adds on top. The base regional rebate is around $2 per square foot, and homes can qualify for up to 5,000 square feet per year, which can add up to $15,000 to $20,000 on a large yard. Amounts change, so check the current rate with your own water provider before you plan.
This is the big one. You must reserve your rebate funds before you remove a single blade of grass. Submit the first part of the application and get approval first. Once your funds are reserved, you generally have about 180 days to finish the project and submit for your rebate. If you rip out the lawn first and apply later, you forfeit the money. Plan the paperwork before the shovel.
